Alcoholism is defined as chronic drinking that evetually interferes with your personal, family and or professional life. While the occasional drink is not likely to be harmful it is important to realise that alcohol is very easily abused
Some factors that are thought to foster alcoholism are a genetic predisposition, learned behavior and childhood experiences, including abuse. The progression of the desease varies from one individual to another. For some it develops as soon as they start to drink; for most others, it progresses much more slowly from the periodic social drink to more frequent indulgance until the person is addicted.
Many alcoholics are what is called binge drinkers and can go for weeks or months on end without touching alcohol. Then when they have that drink they are not able to stop until they are totally incapacitated or they pass out. All these drinkers have a problem just staying sober, they are not likely to suffer evere withdrawl symptoms, such as sweating,, irritability, nausea,, vomiting, and total weakness. More severe conditions may devlop after 2 to 4 days time, and may include delerium, tremers (DTs), a condition that is marked by fever and delirium.
EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLISM
First and foremost chronic abuse of alcohol takes a heavy physical and psychological toll on mind and body.Very often alcoholics do not appear to be drunk but eventualy their ability to carry out their work and normal daily activities. They become very susceptible to depression, mood changes and even become violent. With alcoholism the suicide rate is much higher than the norm. Alcoholics tend to also be heavy smokers and also could lead to other dangerous drugs. On average alcoholism shortens life expectancy, not just because of suicide but of the risks of other health problems, including cancer of the pancreas, liver, and esophagus. For women drnking heavily while pregnant may have a baby with fetal alcohol syndrome, or other side effects.
Sobriety
Total abstinence is the only real cure for alcoholism and this for many is very difficult to achieve and sustaine. To completely withdraw from alcohol may require medical help and supervision. Or a stay in hospital or a clinic. Afterwards support is the main thing to seek out first, Alcoholics Anonymous is the place to be. Alcoholism is a disease that can be beaten get help...just ask.
