Anemia is an umbrella term for a variety of different disorders that are characterized by the inability of the red blood cells to carry sufficient oxygen. This can be due to an abnormalty in the shape or composition of the cells or a deficiency in the number of cells. One of the most common abnormalties is a low level of hemoglobin, the iron and protein based red pigment in the blood that carries oxygen from your lungs to all the bodies cells. Symptoms of anemia therefore reflect oxygen starvation.
Symptoms:
- dizziness
- pale mucous membranes
- always tired
- breathlessness
- palpitation and maybe a rapid pulse
- poor appetite
- even cardiac arrhythmias
Iron Deficiency Anemia.
In North America this is the most common type of anemia is due to iron deficiency, which is usually caused by massive or chronic blood loss. Surgery patients, accident victims, and people with bleeding ulcers or intestinal cancer often have iron deficiency anemia.
Iron-deficiency anemia is easy to treat, but only when you know what you are dealing with. Since it can be debilitating, and other more serious problems may cause the same or simmilar symptoms, you will want to see your doctor.
Eat Plenty Of:
- Organ Meats, beef and other meats,
poultry, fish and egg yolks for iron
vitam B12
- Dried beans and peas, tofu and other
soy products, dates, raisins, dried
appricots, blackstrap molasses and
all good plant sourses of iron.
- Iron enriched breads and cereals.
- Citrus fruits and other sources of
vitamin C, which increase iron absorption.
- Green leafy vegetables for folate.
Cut Down On:
- Bran, spinach, and rhubarb which
hinder iron absorption.
- Zinc and calcium supplements, antacids,
coffee and tea which also hinder iron
absorption.
Avoid Completely:
- Iron supplements unless precribed by
your physician.
Of course there are other forms of anemia, but as you can see for iron deficiency anemia some simple diet changes can and will eliminate the chances of this problem in most prople. But always let your doctor know of you have any of the symptoms above.
