The standard response of a conventional doctor to a bladder infection is to prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic that kills off just about every type of bacteria in the body. Yes the drug does normally clear up the infection, which is typically caused by Escherichia coli bacteria that have migrated up your urinary tract into the bladder. It frees you of the primary sysmptom; burning, painful and frequent urination.
Regrettably, the fittest E. coli can survive and devlop into an atibiotic resistant breed that causes recurrent bladder infections that the drug can't cure. In other words, the solution may bring about an even worse problem.
Antibiotics must be given in some cases of bladder infecto\ionn, especially when there is high fever. In many cases however, you can successfully treat a bladder infection by utilising an range of alternative natural remedies.
CRANBERRY OR BLUEBERRY:
A component of cranberry and blueberry juice stops E. coli bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls, helping to heal the infection quickly. One benefit is that the juices don't work by acidifying the urine, which is good because alkaline urine is more beneficial in beating bladder infections. Drink 24 ounces of unsweetened juice a day in 8 ounce servings. Don't use the sweetened brands as sugar depresses the immune system.
It is also useful to take dehydrated extracts of cranberries or blueberries in capsule or tablet form merely follow the dosage on the label.
WATER:
Along with drinking that cranberry and blueberry juice, you should be drinking lots of water to flushout the bladder and rid it of the infection. Try to drink at the minimum 64 ounces of water a day.
MAGNESIUM CITRATE:
The nutritional supplement magnesium citrate creates alkaline urine, which makes it harder for E. coli to survive. It is recommended to take 300 to 400 milligrams a day of this supplement for as long as you have the infection.
VITAMINS AND BIOFLVONOIDS:
To make it more difficult for the bacteria to stick you want to take vitmin C, vitamin A, and bioflavonoids, as they help fortify the inner surface of the bladder. Suggested dose of 1,000 to 4,000 milligrams of vitamin C, 300 to 600 milligrams of bioflavonoids, and 50,000 international units of vitamin A (under medical supervision).
Although high doses of vitamin A are very effective in helping to beat bladder infections, beware that they are also toxic if taken over a long period of time. Take this level of vitamin A no longer than one week.
ZINC:
The mineral zinc strengthens and powers up the immune system, helpng to fight off the bladder infection. Recommended 30 milligrams a day dosage during the infection.
HERBS:
A combination of four herbs can help beat a bladder infection. Those advocated are uva-ursi, which helps kill bacteria in the urine; couch grass, which cleanses and soothes the bladder; dandalion, a diuretic that increases the fow of urine to help fush out the bacteria; and echinacea, which strengthens the immune system. Combine 1 ounce of a tincture of each herb in a bottle then take 1/2 teaspoon of this mixture three times a day.
HOMEOPATHY:
If you develop honeymoon cystitis which is a bladder infection that occurs after frequent intercourse the homeopathic remedy Staphysagria can help to clear it up. Again just follow the dosage on the label.
PROFESSIONAL CARE:
See your health care professional if you should find blood in the urine, a fever that does not go away, or a fever and pain near one or both kidneys, which is a sign of possible kidney infection.
