Many conventional doctors will tell you that a boil is a bacterial infection of a sweat gland or hair follicle, typically on the face or in the armpit or the groin, that is caused by a pore or follicle being blocked by dead skin cells and other debris. The human bodies immune system's white blood cells die in a conflict, producing large amounts of puss along with inflammation, swelling, and pain.
By and large a single boil is the case, but recurring boils are possible, and are likely stimulated by gastrointestinal bacteria entering the bloodstream and advancing a skin infection. Boils can also be caused by eating too a great deal of sugar, either from refined sugar and even the sugar from fruit.
Small boils of less than 1/2 inch across can be cured by alternative medicine techniques, but never lance or press a boil to open it, this can spread the infection and can definately cause scarring of the skin.
HYDROTHERAPY:
Hydrotherapy, using hot compresses on a boil will increase the blood flow to the area and may decrease the bacteria in the boil area. Bacteria can not live when there is an adequate blood flow to the area of the boil.
For an acute boil or on that pops up suddenly or overnight and it is not recurrent immerse a washcloth in hot water, as hot as you can tolerate without burning your skin, wring it out and place it on the boil for 20 minutes at least twice a day.
HYDROTHERAPY: (hot and cold compresses to drain puss)
After using hot compresses to treat a boil for one or two days, using alternating hot and cold compresses to draw out the pus is a good idea. Again you should soak a washcloth in hot water, wring it out and place it over the boil for 10 minutes. Then apply another washcloth soaked in cold water for another 10 minutes. Try to repeat this cycle at least 3 times, and repeat this treatment at least twice a day.
ECHINACEA and GOLDENSEAL: (anti-bacterial herbs)
A herbal formula with echinacea and goldensseal will help to kill the bacteria in the boil. Take one tablespoon of a tincture of both herbs three times a day until the boil is gone. (be forwarned the taste is very bitter).
TURMERIC:
Tumeric is a cooling herb that can reduce the inflammation of the boil and help prevent recurrence of the boils.
Look for a standardized extract of tumeric powder and take 450 milligrams three times a day. Or you can use it to make a paste that will quickly bring a boil to a head.
You can in a blender combine 1 reaspoon of tumeric powder, 1 teaspoon of epsom salts, and a baked onion with enough water to make a thick paste. Then just before bedtime spread the paste on a piece of cheesecloth and put the cloth over the boil. Now cover the cheesecloth with plastic wrap so the yellow coloring of the tumeric dosen't get into your bedding, then secure the poultice with a bandage. Leave this poultice on the boil overnight and repeat this for two nights.
Remember if you have a boil that does not show improvement within a few days you should see your doctor or a dermatologist for treatment. If you ever notice red lines radiating from a boil, if you have a fever, or swelling or it is extremely tender under a thick layer of skin see your doctor right away
