Migraines affect women 3 times more than they do men, and most commonly start between the ages of 18 and 44. Doctors think that they begin when triggerslike dietary, hormonal, enviromental, emotional, and other factors cause blood vesels in the brain to contsrict and then relax. These distorted blood vessels prompt nerve endings to send out pain signals.

The triggers that can set off a migraine vary widely from one person to another, but some are more common than others. A number of the following triggers can be avoided entirely; and others can at least be minimized.

FOOD-MIGAINE LINK:

Many food additives, and other dietary components can trigger and cause migraines, but the triggers vary from one to another person, folowing are the most common ones.

* Aged cheeses, sour cream, and certain milk products

* Fresh yeast, sourdough, other yeast breads. * Fermented foods, including pickles, soy sauce and miso.

* Some legumes, especially dried beans, lentils and soy products.

* Chocolate and cocoa.

* Organ meats and meats that are salted, dried cured, smoked, or contain nitrites

* Many fruits, including avocados, bananas, citrus fruits, figs, papayas, passion fruits, plantains, pineapples, rasberries, red plums, and raisins.

* Seasonings and flavor enhancers especially artificial sweeteners, ginger, molasses, and MSG.

Dietary Triggers: these may be the easiest to control. Keep a food diary, note what foods seem to prompt symptoms, and then eliminate them. It's also important to eat regular meals, because excessive hunger can trigger a headache.

The caffeine in coffee and other beverages as well as in many over-the-counter analgesic drugs can play a dual role in migraines. Ecessive ingestion can cause and contribute to the frequency of headaches. On the other hand, once you are completely off caffeine, you may be able to use it to ward off an attack, because it constricts dilated blood vessels. At the first sign of an aura or pain, drink a cup of strong coffee or a cola, take 2 aspirin, and lie down in a dark, quiet room. The episode may pass in a short time.

Emotional Triggers: these tend to be the negative ones, such as anger, resentment, depression, fatigue, anxiety, and stress.

Enviromental Triggers: these include glare, bright lights, loud noises, strong odors, cigarette smoke and changes in temperature, weather, or even altitude.

Hormonal Triggers: these are experienced by women and are usually related to the menstrual cycle; they can also be caused by the use of estrogen supplements or high estrgen oral contraceptives.

Activity Triggers: these include irregular or no excercise at all, inadequate or excessive sleep, eyestrain, and motion sickness.

Herbal Relief (Feverfew)

Similar to aspirin, the herb feverfew may help reduce the frequency of migraines, it contains compounds called sesqiterpene lactones, which may have anti-inflamatory properties similar to aspirin's.

Some doctors suggest taking one or two capsules of freeze dried feverfew daily to reduce headache episodes. Start slowlly because it may cause allergic reaction in some people.
